The Kanawha County school board is focusing on making sure that children have enough to eat during the summer months.

The result of a meeting on Thursday evening was to launch a pilot free lunch program in Kanawha county.

All elementary school students in Kanawha county will eat for free next year, as will six middle schools that were chosen.

"I just wanna stress that it's a one year pilot study, and in a year it could end, or may continue depending on what the pilot study shows to the federal government who is trying this out for the first time," said Ron Duerring, Kanawha County Superintendent of Schools.

The program is made possible since West Virginia was one of four states chosen to be a part of the federal "community eligibility option."
