Local runners and walkers will do their best to beat the
heat Friday evening in Charleston
while supporting a local charity.
The Celebrate Independence Day 5K Run and 2-mile walk is
scheduled for 7:45 p.m. on Kanawha
Boulevard Friday evening.
Cost of registration on site is $25 and proceeds go to
the Childhood Language
Center.
The Center's motto is, "We help kids speak, hear, and
understand" and they are currently treating about 90 children with speech or
hearing problems. According to leaders at the Language
Center, they treat all
children free of charge regardless of age, race or gender, with a variety of
communication and learning disorders including speech and hearing disorders, Down
syndrome, autism, Asbergers syndrome, cerebral palsy or other disabilities.
The race and walk to support the Children's Learning
Center starts on Kanawha
Boulevard at the Union
Building and heads east toward the state
Capitol, then returns.
Walkers will complete 2 miles while runners will compete
over 5 kilometers, which is 3.1 miles. The race is put on in part by the
City of Charleston Parks and Recreation Department as well as the Tallman Track
Club of Charleston.
