With power out around the region following the storm, many drivers found it difficult to find gas stations with any supply. And for some, it was even harder to find stations with power.

Lines to the pumps wrapped around entire properties, even blocking traffic in Charleston.

Drivers have been asking all day whether the tank is half empty or full. But the answer was usually empty.

Diana Armstrong's car ran out of gas while she was waiting for fuel. That's why she borrowed her friend's car—which eventually ran out of gas, too. She needed enough gas to get back to Hurricane.

"I'm out of gas in the truck and I need to get back home," Armstrong said.

At a nearby station on the West Side, Chris Workman sat on the ground eating dinner with his family. They only had enough fuel to make it to the station, which was closed due to power failure. Workman's grandmother picked up the family about 30 minutes later.

"It's bad. My family's sitting out here in the heat and I just went to get them home and in the air conditioning," he said.

But one group does benefit from these outrageous lines: the gas stations that continue to sell fuel.

"It's good for business. It's too hot to be sitting in the car so they come inside. We've already sold out all our ice," said Rick Carpenter, a station cashier.

He added that so many people had flocked to the pumps this weekend because they were traveling out of state for the holiday weekend—and they needed fuel to return home.
