Business impact from Friday’s storm: One extreme to another

TEAYS VALLEY, West Virginia -

The sound of items passing over a scanner was a familiar one this weekend at Teays Valley Foodland.  They had power throughout the weekend for people to stock up on supplies, and they did just that.

"Saturday was about 5 to 6 times what we normally do, and Sunday came back about 3 times what we normally do," said Roger Allen, owner of the Teays Valley Foodland.

Allen said one thing that helped is the store has two weeks worth on inventory on hand.

"We had all four registers the biggest part of the day Saturday and Sunday  The only thing we ran out of is we were out of bread a couple hours and we were out of eggs for about a half an hour.  Other than that we had product," said Allen.

"We did loose revenue from lost business," said Marc Brown, co-owner of the Fireside Grille in Teays Valley.

On weekends when restaurants do a booming business, the Fireside Grille lost thousands in revenue from the weekend because they had no power.

"Unfortunately it did come Friday night when the place was packed.  We were on a 30 minute wait and we lost a lot of business from the weekend and from missing weekend business," said Brown.

The restaurant reopened Monday morning at 11.  Brown is hoping to make up some of the lost revenue this week, possibly from those still without power and needing a place to eat

Brown says Fireside Grille has insurance to will help them recoup some of the losses from the weekend.
