Friday evening's storm continues to have an impact on thousands of people in Charleston with power remaining out in several parts of the city.

Downed trees and power lines are still causing problems for residences and businesses alike, and city crews will be working through the holiday to remove trees and debris as safely as possible, according to a news release from the city on Tuesday morning.

The City of Charleston will collect garbage as usual the rest of this week, including regular Wednesday collection routes on July 4. Where storm debris has restricted traffic - and where large trucks may not be able to get through - residents are asked to place their refuse for collection at the nearest spot that would be accessible by the packers on their routes.

Tuesday will be the last day for the special collection sites at the Kanawha City Community Center, North Charleston Community Center and Cantley Drive park and ride where packer trucks have been and will be stationed until 7 p.m. Tuesday to help ease the burden on people who have lost food because of the power outages.

The city pools at Kanawha City and Martin Luther King Jr. Centers will be open all week, including July 4. The Cato pool remains closed because of the power outage. Once power is restored, pool managers say it may take one day to clean up and prepare the pool for public use.

The city's recreation centers will be closed for the holiday, but the Kanawha City Community Center will remain open as a relief station only. Nearly 40 people stayed in that center Monday night.

The city's kickoff celebration for Independence Day is scheduled for Tuesday from 8 p.m. - 10 p.m. in Haddad Riverfront Park. The outdoor event, including a free concert by the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and fireworks, could be affected by weather, as scattered thunderstorms are forecast for the afternoon and evening.
