CBS News reports that actor Andy Griffith died Tuesday morning at 86. Griffith portrayed the sheriff in the popular "Andy Griffith Show" during the 1960s.
Andy Griffith passed away from an illness, according to a statement by the family.
He appeared in several movies and television shows, including "Matlock" which ran from 1986 to 1995.
His death was confirmed by the Dare County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina. Griffith died in his home on Roanoke Island.
