AEP linemen working day and night to restore power across the state

Posted: Updated:

AEP has had to call workers in from across the country to help restore power to hundreds of thousands of people in the region.

Crews are working day and night with just enough time to sleep.

On Tuesday, a group of men worked on Coonskin Drive, cleaning up zapped power lines and setting new power poles.

They are all from Tennessee.

Their work days have been extremely long.

"Most of us are working 16 hours," said worker Charles Newton.

Newton said the rural areas have been difficult to navigate.

"It's not easy. I mean, you see us maybe standing around, but you don't understand that we've been on the side of a hill or something, getting a pole up on the side of a mountain isn't really easy," he said.

The heat and humidity hasn't made their efforts any easier.

"It's been a little rough. The weather has been the worst. It's been hot and humid," Newton said.

Despite the long hours and hot weather, they are doing everything they can to get power on in neighborhoods throughout the state.

"It's just part of the job, motivation. Seeing these people happy when you turn their power back on, it's something we're used to. We do it on all of the storms," said worker Doug Vance.

Jared Mcgaha agrees.

"It's my inspiration to help people and this is the only way I figure I can do it," he said.
