When West Virginia's governor declared a State of Emergency on Saturday, June 30, it allowed for all government resources to be devoted immediately to helping those in need and restoring power as soon as possible in the wake of the storm from the night before.

Some may not be aware that the declaration also created a change in the look of the state capitol building itself. The top portion of the capitol dome has been illuminated since Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin declared the State of Emergency. That section of the dome contains the "State of Emergency" lantern according to the West Virginia website.

The 293- foot gold dome is five feet higher than the dome of the U.S. Capitol. The entire dome is gilded in 23 ½ karat gold leaf applied to the copper and lead roof in tiny 3 3/8 inch squares. The light in the top portion of the dome serves as a visual reminder for residents throughout the duration of the State of Emergency.

The governor has asked West Virginians without power to try and stay as cool as possible and drink plenty of water. The elderly and others susceptible to extreme heat should consider moving to an air conditioned location or seeking help if they feel that their health is threatened. All West Virginians are urged to check in on friends and neighbors who may need assistance, and to call 911 in the event of emergency.
