The Manna Meal Soup Kitchen served an Independence Day lunch Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. John Episcopal Church on Quarrier Street.
The nonprofit paired up with the Spencer family to put on the event. For the past 25 years, the family has cooked meals for the hungry in Charleston every July 4.
Volunteers predicted more than 400 people attended the event--almost twice the number of usual attendants. Organizer Gloria Richmond said she attributes the big crowd to storm-related incidents.
"People don't have power. They don't have food," Richmond said. "We have to help each other."
Bobby Brown frequently comes to Manna Meal to eat. But today truly felt like a holiday to him.
"This is a blessing from God," Brown said.
