AEP President: Public safety is our first priority

As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, Appalachian Power officials report that the company has restored electricity to almost 316,000 customers since Friday's storm.

But 155,000 of the company's half-million customers in West Virginia still lack power. More than 100,000 customers in Virginia face the same issue.

"Public safety is our first priority," said Charles Patton, the president of AEP. Despite the fact that Kanawha County still has the highest number of outages, Patton said that he regards all regions with equal importance.

According to a press release, more than 3,000 workers continue to restore electricity to customers—some traveled as far as Florida, Mississippi and Georgia. Tree removal workers, damage assessment specialists, outline line contractors and company line mechanics belong to these ranks.

"This is the worst outage in Appalachian Power history," Patton said. He explained that for that reason, it is difficult to apply lessons from this disaster to the next.

Patton predicts to complete restoration efforts by Sunday.
