Fire officials: Don’t set off your own fireworks

HUNTINGTON, West Virginia -

This year's summer season has been filled with extreme heat and dry conditions, and for those reasons fire officials advise you don't set off your own fireworks.  However, if you do they have some tips to stay safe.

"You should have a garden hose or a bucket of water nearby.  Don't use any fireworks that go up in the air or explode.  Only use the sparklers and the little things on the ground," said Lieutenant Eric Adkins of the Huntington Fire Department.

Lieutenant Adkins said firefighters are expecting more than 40 fireworks-related calls per truck the evening of the Fourth of July, adding to an already busy year for firefighters.

"Due to the recent storms we've had, there is limited access to certain areas of the city, so our response times not only because of the call volume, but because of those roads that trees are down on we may not get to the area you're at," said Lieutenant Adkins.

Officials advise use some common sense to have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July.
