Mt. State Art and Craft Fair gets under way near Ripley

Posted: Updated:

Despite the severe storms that struck West Virginia on Friday, June 29 the Mountain State Art and Craft Fair is open.

Workers set up tents and displays earlier in the week for the event which is scheduled to run from Thursday through Saturday, July 7 according to event president Jan Sizemore. "There is power at Cedar Lakes, and workers will begin erecting tents today," said Sizemore in a news release. "We want to reassure the public and the show's artisans, crafters and vendors that we'll be here and that we plan to have a full slate of attractions and activities."

Among the attractions visitors will find this year is a Civil War encampment, kite making, stunt kite flying demonstrations, and a NASA small rocket exhibition on Thursday. A youth fishing derby will be held on Friday, and the firecracker chili cookoff will be held on Saturday.

Other activities include interactive artisan booths with demonstrations in broom making, basket weaving and stained glass workshops. Musical acts include the Samples Brothers Band, Jay Humphreys Trio and Sheppard Brothers Band.

The Mountain State Art and Craft Fair is traditionally held during the Independence Day weekend at Cedar Lakes Conference Center. Visitors should take exit 132, the Ripley-Fairplain exit off I-77.

The fair runs Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Parking is free. Some of the booths are air conditions and organizers said Thursday that other tents have been outfitted with fans to help people deal with the expected heat and humidity.

Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors over 60, $2 for children 6-12, and children under 2 are admitted for free. Groups of 25 or more are admitted for $5 per person, and groups of senior citizens are admitted for $4 per person.
