59 mph wind gust measured in Charleston as storms cause more damage

The National Weather Service measured a 59 mph wind gust at Charleston's Yeager Airport during today's storm.

Traffic lights on MacCorkle Avenue from Patrick Street to the University of Charleston are not functioning, according to Kanawha County officials.

Officials are reminding people to treat intersections with non-functioning lights as four-way stops.

The Kanawha County Emergency Operations Center has received several calls about trees being down.

A strong storm system hit the area just before noon.

Motorists are asked to use caution.

A strong line of thunderstorms is moving through part of central West Virginia late this morning.

The storms are expected to hit the Charleston area just before noon.

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement about the storm system. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph and dime-sized hail are possible. Heavy downpours also are possible.
