Residents are being urged to use extreme caution as heat and humidity continue to build across the region.
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for much of West Virginia, Kentucky and Southeastern Ohio until 8 p.m. Sunday.
A Heat Advisory means that a period of high temperatures is expected. The combination of heat and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.
In order to combat the heat, it is recommended that you attempt the following:
Drink plenty of water
Stay in an air-conditioned shelter
Stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside
When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening
Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing and drink plenty of water
Elderly and young children are especially susceptible to the effects of the heat and should take extra precautions. People without power due to recent severe thunderstorms will also be greatly impacted.
To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency and health officials advise calling 911.
Cooler and less humid air is on the way next week, but it may come at a price. A cold front will push into the area on Sunday afternoon bringing strong and possibly severe thunderstorms to the area.
