Kanawha County continued to give away free water and ice to help people weather high temperatures.
According to a news release from Kanawha County officials, ice and water will be available to anybody who needs it. The ice and water will be available at each location until Saturday, July 7, at 7 p.m.:
• Flinn Elementary – Sissonville
• Ruthlawn Elementary
• Charleston Civic Center-Lee Street Entrance
• Pinch Elementary
• Herbert Hoover High School
• Riverside High School
• East Bank Middle School
Dupont Middle School will stay open tonight as an overnight shelter for Kanawha County.
These stations will re-open Sunday, July 8, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Charleston Fire and Police Departments have been manning the site at the Civic Center since Friday. A steady stream of people have come since then, asking for necessities.
"The people who come here, they're the ones without power for a week. They're completely out of electricity, ice, water. Their food is spoiling in their refrigerators so they really need the ice and water," said Charleston Asst. Fire Chief John Wilcox.
Some people say they are thankful for these free items—especially because they feel disappointed with the help they've received thus far.
"Nobody's come up with no relief, no nothing," said Jason Thomas, who lives in Charleston. "We're out of food . So we appreciate anything these guys can do. People have to have water."
Other people had even bigger problems.
"We're under a boil water advisory, so we can't boil water because we don't have any electricity," said Cross Lanes resident Pat Skeen.
And these water and ice sites help more than just residents. They help entire communities. The Tyler Mountain Fire Dept. came to the Civic Center to pick up enough water for their town.
"Good help is hard to find. These people are out here sweating like we are," said Elliott Tawney, of the Tyler Mountain Fire Dept.
