130th Airlift Wing turned into FEMA staging ground

One local landmark has transformed to bring widespread assistance to the entire state.

The 130th Airlift Wing in Charleston has become the staging area for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Twenty FEMA workers and their support teams arrived to Charleston last Saturday after last weekend's storms. They've been working in collaboration with 50 Army National Guardsmen and 70 130th Wing personnel.

"It's truly a monumental effort on part of everybody involved. I've been in the guard for 31 years and this is the biggest event I've ever seen us respond to," said Gen. James Hoyer of the West Virginia National Guard.

For the past week, workers have been moving items from the hangar to the trucks, which then drive the supplies to communities ravaged by the storm.

And FEMA workers said there is no time frame for their stay.

"However long FEMA is needed to be here by the state of West Virginia, we'll stay," said FEMA Executive Affairs Officer Nick Morici.

He said that FEMA deployed almost 300 trucks of water around the state.

Those also carried 200 oxygen tanks, 386,000 meals, and 98 generators.
