HUNTINGTON, West Virginia -

Huntington City Council approved on first reading an ordinance that would authorize the city to buy a boat for the Huntington Police Department.

The vessel would be used to patrol seven miles of the Ohio River that border the city.  Chief Skip Holbrook told council that on several occasions, police have responded to a water-related incident where crimes were committed.

The price tag of the boat is $187,000, which would be paid for by a federal grant.

The item will be read again for a second time and possibly voted on at the next council meeting for the purchase to be approved.
