City of Charleston officials report that crews are discovering several unlicensed contractors who may be taking advantage of the storm aftermath that has downed trees and power lines.
"Legitimate contractors will be licensed with both the State of West Virginia and the City of Charleston. They also should have a plan for disposing of the debris from the properties where they are working and be able to present a certificate of insurance to cover their work on private property," said Rod Blackstone with the City of Charleston in a news release.
"Unfortunately there may be others who are in town, skirting the rules and taking advantage of property owners who are feeling vulnerable right now," Blackstone said.
Severe storms on June 29 and July 8 affected thousands of trees in Charleston and caused widespread power outages in multiple areas of the city. Charleston's Public Works Department has been working overtime to clear roads and help the power company in restoring electricity. Blackstone said he wants to remind residents that because of the heavy demands on Public Works teams, there may be some lengthy delays in clearing all debris.
