Southern WV law enforcement agencies receive federal funding

Posted: Updated:

Three police departments in southern West Virginia will receive federal funding to upgrade equipment and support law enforcement initiatives, according to U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va.

According to a press release, "As our police and sheriff departments take a step forward in protecting citizens with federal funding, Congress ought not to take a step backward by cutting that funding," said Rahall. "Yet, federal funding to build partnerships with local law enforcement, our first line of national defense on so many fronts, is under constant attack these days in the halls of Congress. Federal investments, like this funding, protects police officers and sheriff deputies and helps give them the tools to do their jobs as our 24/7 watchman throughout this nation. This not only saves lives, it saves money and scarce resources. I will continue to fight to protect the JAG grant program and other effective crime-fighting initiatives."

The City of Huntington and Cabell County have jointly been awarded $69,328 to support criminal justice initiatives, using the funding to purchase law enforcement equipment and supplies to promote officer safety and improve the local criminal justice system. Mercer County will receive $20,755 to purchase two used vehicles to allow the Mercer County Home Confinement program to better supervise defendants on electronic monitoring. Fayette County has been awarded $13,327 to purchase new portable radios to replace older models and provide access for each active deputy while on duty.

The funding was awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice through the FY 2012 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, which provides funding to state and local governments to support a broad range of crime control and prevention activities. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems."
