WOWK-TV partners with AARP Foundation to combat Medicare fraud

Posted: Updated:

Each year billions of federal dollars are lost because of health care fraud, error and abuse according to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The West Virginia Senior Medicare Program is using volunteers to spread the word to fight scams and hopefully save taxpayers money.

WOWK-TV is partnering with the AARP Foundation in West Virginia to help people understand the system, especially the Medicare summary notices. "It's amazing how many seniors get those Medicare summary notices in the mail and just put them in the trash because they don't understand," said Sylvia Watkins with the AARP Foundation.

The AARP has said that a more user-friendly summary is in the works. Another key protecting yourself is to safeguard your medicare number, which is usually your social security number.

"If something sounds too good to be true it probably is. If someone offers to send you something for free, check it out it might be a scam," said Susan Lefew with the AARP Foundation.

If you suspect medicare fraud of any kind contact the West Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol Program at 1-800-799-4638.
