American Red Cross volunteers make personal sacrifices to help storm victims

Posted: Updated:

Volunteers with the American Red Cross have been helping with storm recovery since just after the first storm hit the region on June 29. They've been going door-to-door to check on residents, pass out ice and water, assist with damage assessment and staff cooling stations for those who don't have electricity.

Most of the volunteers are from other parts of the United States. Lonnie Sussman is from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Peggy Bentz is from Dublin, Georgia, and Janice Winston made the trip from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to help storm victims.

They're missing milestones in their own lives to help people who are suffering in the wake of the storms.

"We have a newborn, born about six months ago, talk about missing something. I'm missing that," said Lonnie Sussman. She's also missing her 21st wedding anniversary. "But I'm awfully glad to be here. My mission is to help those that are in need. My anniversary will happen again next year, but right now these guys are depending on us to take care of them."

The American Red Cross is not funded by the government. The money comes from donations sent in from people across the country. You can learn more about The American Red Cross by clicking on this link.
