Storm debris disposal in Huntington is causing drainage issues

Posted: Updated:

After the recent storms, many people are dealing with tree limbs and debris that was left behind.

The Huntington Storm Water Committee met on Tuesday to discuss some of those problems.

Some people in Huntington are taking tree limbs and debris and throwing them into creeks which is causing issues with the storm water system.

The city cleaned several creeks to avoid flooding. They are under a mandate by the Environmental Protection Agency to clean up, so they are urging residents to dispose of the debris properly.

"No one wants to be flooded. No one wants the sewer to back up in their basements. The little things that citizens or contractors do to pollute these streams are causing these problems," said Huntington City Councilman, Mark Bates.

Any Huntington resident with debris is asked to contact the city to pick it up. Since there are so many requests, it may take a while. Officials are asking people to be patient.
