HUNTINGTON, West Virginia -
A van is parked outside our studios on 5th Avenue in Huntington. We need your help to fill it with non-perishable food items. The reason is the extreme heat and power outages from storms have put the Huntington Area Food Bank in dire straits. The push is on to replenish its supply of food because so many depend on the agency to eat.
"Knowing you are going to go hungry is pretty scary," said Tonya Thompson of Huntington.
She said she took money intended for bills to eat out because her she didn't have power for eight days. The family also looked to other family members, on fixed incomes so they would not go hungry. Now she's looking to the Huntington Area Food Bank for help.
"It's been terrifying. You're burning up and don't know when you are going to get electricity. Eight days is a long way to go when it's really hot outside. There's no way to prepare any meals. It's been a struggle," said Thompson.
For the sake of Tonya and thousands of others like her across the state, your help is needed to re-stock food banks like the Huntington Area Food Bank. Non-perishable food items as well as money will go a long way to help.
