Replenishing food banks in WV

Posted: Updated:
HUNTINGTON, West Virginia -

We've parked a van at our studios on 5th Avenue in Huntington so you can help us fill it with non-perishable food.  Because of the extreme heat and power outages from storms, the Huntington Area Food Bank is without 70 per cent of their normal food supply and it's having a trickle-down effect.

Freezers that once held meat now sit empty.  That food was for Friday evening meals at the DNR Soup Kitchen in Guyandotte.  Because the freezers lost power, 1,600 pounds of meat had to be thrown away.  Organizers are at the Huntington Area Food Bank to replenish their food supply so the Friday evening meals can continue.

"One gentleman told me I count on this for my Friday meal.  He's in one of those motorized wheelchairs.  He said I count on this for my Friday meal.  I don't eat except right here.  It's just too tough because my income is fixed.  I don't have a lot of money and you all make it easy on us on Friday.  I don't have to worry about dinner," said Dave Stephens, a volunteer with the DNR Soup Kitchen.

Your monetary donations will help restock groups like the DNR Soup Kitchen with meat...and filling a van with non-perishable food will also help.
