More West Virginia students will have access to free meals this coming school year.

The state Department of Education is expanding its Universal Free Meals pilot program, according to a news release. The program currently serves Cabell, Clay, Fayette, Gilmer, Lincoln, Mason, McDowell and Mingo counties.

For the 2012-2013 school year, nearly 90,000 students in 283 schools will take part in the program, according to the news release.

The expansion is possible through the Community Eligibility Option, the news release states. This year, 35 of West Virginia's 54 eligible counties will participate.

"Feeding children is paramount to student achievement," state Superintendent Jorea Marple said in the news release. "We know that countless children in our state go to school each day hungry, making it impossible for them to focus on school work."
