Social media top of mind following West Virginia power outages

The big storm that swept through the area at the end of June was a big wake up call for businesses that suffered outages.

It was top of mind as business leaders gathered for a social media workshop today in Charleston.

The outage forced those shops to rely on social media as one way to stay in contact with their customers.

At this session, sponsored by the Charleston Area Alliance, they learned how to get the most out of digital tools like twitter, facebook and youtube.

"I think there was a lot of creativity that was talked about today, allowing individuals here to know that you can be a small biz, but you can also be just as savvy as a big biz with a lot of money, just using the tools currently available that actually are free to use. I thought it was a wonderful program," said Del. Meshea Poore, D-Kanawha.

Matthew Thompson, communications manager for the Charleston Area Alliance said social media is always changing, so employers need to always keep up with those changes.
