WV agriculture workers learn how to handle a bee emergency

Posted: Updated:

The West Virginia Department of Agriculture hosted a response training session on Thursday about how to deal with a bee emergency.

The WVDA said millions of bees are moved on America's highways every year in order to provide pollination services for crops, but not all of those tractor trailers reach their destinations.

Among the training scenarios was one designed to safely remove an injured person from disabled vehicles and safely control the bees. "We have had situations here in West Virginia, that have resulted in injury. We are trying to educate first responders and the bee keepers on how to avoid those and how to deal with them when they do happen," said William Kern, a professor at the University of Florida.

The state agriculture department conducts a series of training exercises throughout the year on a variety of subjects.
