AARP West Virginia and the AARP Foundation donated $20,000 to assist the Mountaineer Food Bank and the Huntington Area Food Bank in replenishing food stock depleted by the continuing storm relief efforts across the state.
AARP West Virginia officials presented $10,000 checks for the Mountaineer Food Bank and Huntington Area Food Bank to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and First Lady Joanne Jaeger Tomblin Wednesday evening in Charleston. "As champions in the fight against hunger, West Virginia's food banks have always gone above and beyond in their efforts to help West Virginia families in need. These agencies certainly rose to the challenge again in their response to the unusual storm event of June 29 and its aftermath, and are to be commended for their efforts," said Gaylene Miller, AARP West Virginia state director.
The $20,000 donation is part of AARP's Drive to End Hunger, a national effort to address the issue of older adult hunger. Since AARP and AARP Foundation launched Drive to End Hunger in 2011, the initiative has donated 12.1 million meals and driven corporate and individual donor commitments with an expected value of $16.8 million.
