Water main break causes problems in Huntington

HUNTINGTON, West Virginia -

It wasn't today's rain that flooded 5th Avenue in Huntington.  A water main break created the mess. Mark Taylor was on his way to work at Huntington Physical Therapy.

"I just noticed the brown water coming through the parking lot.  Water was spewing from the ground on 22nd street," said Taylor.

Taylor said there have been water main breaks in that area before, so they were ready.

"We've kept water on hand to have for patients.  We have water to flush the toilets if we need them.  It was business as usual but just inconvenient," said Taylor.

Fridays are big business for pizza shops, but the sign at the Pizza Hut told customers they were closed.  They had no water due to the water main break.

"The water got up to waste-level with me when it was at its highest.  If I were to walk out farther probably would have been much higher than that," said Daniel Bragg of Huntington.

Daniel Bragg woke up to find out the street in front of his house was a river.  Luckily he was able to move his truck out of harm's way.

"I was surprised at how fast it flooded.  I had never seen it flood that fast before," said Bragg.

Crews from West Virginia-American Water spent all day fixing the break.  They have finished repairing the break but a few lanes of 5th Avenue remain blocked because of the water.

A boil water advisory is in effect for about 50 customers around the area where the water line break happened.
