The West Virginia Supreme Court has approved a three-year pilot program to assist lawyers who have addictions or physical or mental health conditions that affect their ability to practice the law.
According to the Associated Press, officials said the goal of the program aims to protect the public and help lawyers who need assistance starting and continuing recovery. The program will also help educate judges, attorneys and the public about the causes of such impairments.
The West Virginia State Bar will fund the program, which cannot exceed $60,000 per year. The state bar is also required to file a report with the court after the first two years so the program can be reviewed.
