Officials have found evidence of bedbugs in some rooms at the American Inn and Budget Inn in Hurricane, according to Jackie Fleishman, administrator of the Putnam County Health Department.
She said an exterminator has been in to spray the rooms and those rooms remain closed to guests.
Hurricane building inspectors also looked over both motels. Mayor Scott Edwards said some of the rooms also have other health and safety issues like mold.
Mayor Edwards said 200 power company workers from Iowa and Nebraska, who were working to restore power because of the storms, visited the hotel. They allegedly refused to stay in their rooms and slept in their trucks instead.
One former guest, Debbie Hall of Chapmanville, tells said, "They lifted up my mattress and they said I had them bad in my bed."
She said she is covered in bed bug bites. "They're on my legs, on my back and on my hind end. To be honest with you, I've got them all over me," said Hall.
While both motels remain open, Mayor Edwards said the owner is on a strict timeline to fix the issues or they will be shut down.
