Sheriff's Association hosting leadership academy

Posted: Updated:

Kids from around the state are gathering in Ona this week to learn about law enforcement.

It is part of the annual West Virginia Sheriff's Association Youth Leadership Academy.

Different activities and classes are planned all week.

Law enforcement demonstrations, a mock trial and an accident investigation are just some of the things they will be doing.

About 150 kids are being instructed by the staff members, which are from the different sheriff's departments throughout West Virginia.

"They get to experience what it takes to be a law enforcement officer. They get to see the equipment that is utilized in that and get a behind-the-scenes look at the law enforcement officer experience," said Tom McComas, Cabell County Sheriff.

The academy wraps up Friday with a graduation.
