With the recent sightings of wildcats in the Ashland area many people are wondering what to do if they encounter wildlife.

A wildlife expert with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources said the best thing to do is try to stay calm.

Game Management Services Supervisor Chris Ryan says for the most part the animals will not threaten you unless they feel threatened themselves.

"Basically if someone encounters a large wild animal they should just leave it alone and more than likely it will go on it's own way and do it's own thing," Ryan said.  "So what you want to do is just leave it alone and it will go away."

Ryan said this is prime breeding time for bears and that people in West Virginia may start seeing them out in their neighborhoods.

Ryan said the best way to keep wildlife out of your yard is to remove food sources like bird feeders, pet food and garbage.
