Federal, state and local elected officials will gather in Berkeley County July 18 to celebrate the opening of Macy's new online fulfillment center.

The center, which will fill online orders placed with Macy's and sister retailer Bloomingdales, is expected to employ approximately 1,200 people year round and  2,000 people during peak holiday shopping times. It expects to have an annual payroll of $30 million.

When the company announced  in December 2010 that it would build its fulfillment center in the Eastern Panhandle county, the land where the building now sits was a cow pasture. Now it is home to the 1.3-million-square-foot fulfillment center. To put the facility's true size into perspective, Stephen Christian, executive director of the Berkeley County Economic Development Authority, said the building is roughly the same size as 27 football fields.

Christian said Macy's picked West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle over several other potential sites because of its close proximity to major East Coast markets, the fact it had a work force ready to go to work and its ability to permit and build the facility so it could be operation this summer and prepare for the 2012 Christmas shopping season.
