People all over the region have been exhibiting mixed reactions regarding the Kanawha County man who fathered his three grandchildren.
Charles Shamblin, 56, of Gallagher, appeared in court yesterday. He was arraigned on sexual assault, incest, and sexual abuse charges. A judge set his trial for October 15.
But friends and family came forward today to voice their own opinion on the man they call "Chucky".
"Chucky is a kind and caring person. He will do anything for anybody," said Wanda McCarthy, a woman who grew up near Shamblin in Gallagher.
She said Shamblin writes to her and her husband from jail and even calls them.
The couple said they're shocked by the accusations-- but if they are true, they believe Shamblin isn't the only guilty one in the case.
"I don't know whether he's guilty or not, but I do know whatever was going on wasn't one-sided. She was just, if not more, eager for whatever was going on than he was," said Lyle McCarthy, who views Shamblin as a son. "She went everywhere he went."
But Shamblin's relatives paint a different picture.
His daughter-in-law said, the alleged relationship between Chucky and his daughter disgusted the entire family, and believes she was forced into bearing those children.
His daughter-in-law also stated that Shamblin fathered seven children, three of whom were born from his daughter.
She added the Shamblins feel embarrassed, ashamed, and they hope he gets the justice he deserves.
Many in the community said they never really knew Shamblin...
And they had no idea what was happening in their backyards.
"God bless the victims of this act," said Robin Davis, a pastor at the church located on the same street as Shamblin's house. "It's rampant all over the nation but this one happens to be in our community at this time.
