SPENCER -

Monday, Roane County Animal Shelter employees picked up more than 100 cats from a home in their community.

All of the cats belonged to the same owner.

Shelter employees said the owner turned the cats over to give them a better life.

Unfortunately the shelter is a small facility and they do not have enough cages to comfortably accommodate so many animals at once.

Shelter workers and volunteers have been reaching out through social media asking for help.

"Most of the cats were in good health," said shelter volunteer Morgan McCune, who stopped by Tuesday to help clean up after the cats. "They are very nice."

Shelter volunteers are hoping this situation will help the public understand the importance of spaying and neutering pets. McCune said this situation demonstrates how quickly breeding among cats and dogs can get out of control.

The shelter has plenty of dry cat food. What they need now is canned cat food and kitten food, kitty litter, litter boxes and food bowls. They also need various cleaning supplies such as bleach, brooms, mops and paper towels.
