The Huntington Sanitary Board is partnering with West Virginia's Department of Environmental Protection to tackle pollution in one "former ash pond" in Wayne County that is currently undeveloped.
According to a DEP press release, the pond was formerly used as a golf course and farmland. Burnt sewage sludge was recently disposed into the water, which has officials worried about metals and semi-volatile organic compounds violating the natural land.
Both organizations will conduct a cleanup to ensure that the area meets standards for environmental and human health by placing limits on nearby excavation and drilling.
Both parties stated they want to make the program "cost-effective." They will submit a final report to the DEP's Office of Environmental Remediation for review after the work is completed.
