AEP Ohio offers tips to decrease energy use and keep homes cooler

The temperatures are once again heating up and the humidity levels are on the rise. Many people are turning up the air conditioning if they have it, or looking for other ways to keep their homes as cool as possible.

Stormtracker 13 Chief Meteorologist Spencer Adkins predicts temperatures in the low to mid 90s on Wednesday. "We do expect more storms tomorrow too, and with all of this humidity we expect heavy downpours when it rains," said Adkins.

AEP Ohio is among the energy providers offering tips for consumer to help decrease cooling costs and use less energy.

  • Set the thermostat at 78 degrees and use ceiling or box fans to increase air circulation.
  • Install a programmable thermostat and set it higher for when you're away.
  • Approximately 10 to 25 percent of energy used to cool homes escapes. Locate and weatherstrip leaks.  
  • Increase attic insulation.
  • Cover windows with light-colored shades to reflect heat.
  • Close draperies and shades on south-facing windows to block sunlight and heat during the day.
  • Install awnings on windows that get excessive sun in the late afternoon.
  • Move furnishings away from floor or return-air vents.
  • Plant a deciduous tree near your home to control the amount of heat that reaches your house.
  • Avoid using heat-producing appliances, such as ovens and clothes dryers, during the hottest part of the day.
  • Unplug all electrical devices and appliances not in use.
