13News Exclusive: 'Bath Salt' company banned from doing business in WV

WINFIELD, West Virginia -

A Georgia company has agreed to a plea deal that bans them from doing business in West Virginia.

In a Putnam County court, attorneys for Nutragenomics, LLC agreed that they would stop selling bath salts to West Virginia residents.

The company sells chemical compounds that come in white or brown powders. They are marketed as bath salts, plant food or incense. Attorneys with the state Attorney General's office said they are simply the chemicals banned by the state legislature in 2011 with slight changes.

"They look at the ban list that the DEA puts out," said Assistant Attorney General Matt Stonestreet. "They have a scientist add an extra molecule. No one knows what the health effects of that are."

In the agreement, Nutragenomics also agrees to put disclaimers on their numerous web sites that they do not sell to West Virginia customers. They are also ordered to provide a list of their West Virginia customers since January 2008.

The investigation was done in conjunction with the Metro Drug Task Force. The court case was heard in Putnam County because, according to Stonestreet, some of the business was done there.

Stonestreet could not say whether or not similar chemical distributors are under investigation.

"I can say this isn't the only distributor doing business in the state. This is one and they're not doing business in the state anymore," said Stonestreet.
