Drug arrests, seizures on the rise in Ohio

Posted: Updated:

Drug arrests and seizures are on the rise, according to statement from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers have seized 27,875 grams of heroin in the first half of 2012, which is a 327 percent increase in comparison to the same period during 2011.

Patrollers said overall drug arrests across Ohio have increased by 30 percent, with marijuana seizures by gram up by 107 percent.

"Our troopers are out on the roadways everyday looking beyond the traffic stop. They are detecting and removing the criminal element from our communities," said Lt. Max Commander of the Gallipolis Post. "But we can't do this on our own; the public is encouraged to call 6-7-7 to report drug activity."

Officials said "dangerous drugs" are now being brought into Ohio in smaller quantities.
