According to The Associated Press, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $6 million contract to begin the next phase of a flood control project in Logan.

U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., said Heeter Construction of Spencer will expand Island Creek's channel from the former Super 8 site to the Logan NAPA store.

Rahall said the total project would cost $40 million and would protect 252 homes and businesses from flooding; Heeter received a $5.8 contract to initially widen the creek in September 2010, but the project is not expected to be finished until at least 2016.
