Members of the Kanawha County Board of Education held a revote on Thursday evening regarding the name of the West Side Elementary School. The board voted 4-1 in favor of adding "Mary C. Snow" to the existing name of the school.
When the school was originally built, students were sent home ballots so they could have input on the naming process. At that time, West Side Elementary was the name people settled on.
But groups in the West Side community formed to protest. They started a petition drive and lobbied the school board members to rename or add May C. Snow's name to the school.
In December 2011, Kanawha County Board of Education members voted to keep the name West Side Elementary despite a petition.
Community pressure continued and recently the school board announced that it would revote the naming issue.
Mary C. Snow was an educator who worked for more than 53 years in the Kanawha County school system. She was the first African-American principal of an integrated school. Snow was also active in the community and volunteered in her West Side neighborhood.
Kanawha County school board member Pete Thaw was the dissenting vote on the naming issue Thursday.
