WV senator supports Governor Tomblin's letter questioning Medicaid expansion

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, D-W.Va., wants some answers from the Obama administration before making any decisions regarding expansion of Medicaid in West Virginia.

He sent a letter Thursday to U.S. Health andHuman Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius with more than a dozen questions about how to implement the programs and how they would be funded. The federal health care law calls for states to expand Medicaid for more residents in 2014. And while the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling upheld the law, it also put limits on the penalties against states if they don't expand.

Sen. Evan Jenkins, D-Cabell County also heads up the West Virginia Medical Association. "Governor Tomblin is on the right page to ask the tough questions of Sec. Sebelius," said Jenkins. "We need to make an informed decision. These are the kinds of questions that need to be answered."

While federal funds will help with any expansion, that money is temporary. Tomblin's letter specifically asks about subsidies and tax credits, plus the federal government's share of Medicaid funding.
