UPDATE

West Virginia State Police have identified the driver that led several law enforcement agencies across several counties in a high-speed chase.

Craig M. Keith of Altoona, Penn, was killed in what State Police are calling "suicide by cop."

A confidential informant told State Police that Keith was determined to not go back to jail, even if that meant convincing police he had a gun. However, State Police are not saying whether he was armed or not.

State Police say Keith has a history of arrests in Altoona, including for assaults and driving under the influence.

A driver who was involved in a high-speed chase through several counties was shot and killed by police early this morning.

The driver, whose name has not been released, was stopped on Interstate 77 near Ripley's Fairplain exit after fleeing from police from several agencies, police said.

Police fired four shots, according to a Jackson County emergency dispatcher. Police put down spike strips near the Fairplain exit. The man ran over the strips, which flattened all four of his tires, the dispatcher said.

Police were called to Mardi Gras Resort and Casino in Nitro early this morning for a disturbance, said 1st Sgt. Michael Baylous, of the West Virginia State Police. After arriving, the man fled, leading police on the chase.

After stopping near mile marker 132 on I-77, the man refused to obey police commands, Baylous said.

"Unfortunately, because of his actions, he was shot ...," Baylous said. "He was pronounced dead at the hospital."
