Grants help communities with high-energy costs

Posted: Updated:

The Rural Utilities Service announced that almost $7 million are available for competitive grants to help communities with very high energy costs, according to a press release from the Kentucky Governor's Office of Agricultural Policy.

The funds could be used to "acquire, build, extend, or upgrade energy generation, transmission or distribution facilities" for areas where the average home expenditure for energy surpasses 27 percent of the country's average.

Those eligible for the grants include persons (also referring to corporations and associations), states, political subdivisions of states, and other bodies that fall under state law. The minimum grant under this program is $20,000 with a maximum of $3 million.

The Rural Utilities Service is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The deadline for this program is July 30, 2012.
