ELEANOR, West Virginia -

The Putnam County Fair enters the home stretch this weekend.

Friday night is one of the highlights of the fair, the 4-H Livestock Auction.  Friday afternoon workers were getting the arena ready for the sale.

More than 160 farm animals like steers, goats and calves will be on the auction block, showing the time and effort the 4-Her has invested in raising the animal over the last six months.

This year the extreme heat presented a challenge.

"You have to bath them quite often with it being so hot.  We don't have very good ventilation in the barn other than our little box fans so we have to frequently wash them to keep them cool so they don't overheat and bloat," said Zack Reedy of the Putnam County 4-H Club.

Animals sell anywhere from $400 to $4,000, and the 4-H young people keep the money.  Zack plans to use the proceeds from selling his steer to pay for college.
