Psychologist provides insight about suspect in movie theater massacre

Posted: Updated:

After a gunman opened fire on patrons at a suburban Denver movie theater early Friday morning during midnight shows of the new Batman movie, many are questioning how it happened and what led to the violence. Twelve people died, ten of them at the theater. Two others died at the hospital. Another 59 adults and children were wounded.

Police arrested a suspect in the shootings, 24-year-old James Holmes. Investigators said Friday that they are confident that he acted alone.

Tim Saar is a psychologist in the Charleston area. He talked about the typical personality traits that often characterize this kind of suspect. He also addressed families and how parents can reassure they children during this uncertain time. "These individuals tend to have very grandiose thinking about themselves, are socially isolated, tend to harbor an awful lot of resentment and envy towards those around them. They tend to be very detached and unable to feel the emotional pain and physical pain of those around them. This is a low probability event. Most of us go to the movies every day and nothing ever happens with regards to that. But it is ok to be realistic with our children that there are times in our world which very bad things happen, but the majority of the time you are safe and maybe to be a little more vigilant to your surroundings when you go out into the world," said Saar.

Police said that Holmes wore body armor, used an assault rifle, a shotgun and a Glock handgun. President Barack Obama has ordered the American flag lowered to half-staff as a mark of respect for the shooting victims.
