HealthNet Aeromedical Services in Morgantown is now using a new method of flight operation when transporting patients. The technique is used in poor visibility or low-hanging clouds and will decrease the number of EMS flights that have to be canceled, according to a press release from HealthNet.

The method is called Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). It allows flights to navigate in poor weather conditions, where pilots typically rely on ground-based navigation tools and GPS systems.

Pilots trained and used extensive in-flight sessions that would simulate the poor conditions and learned to navigate without any ground references.

There have been four HealthNet pilots to complete the program and successfully transported patients using the IFR method in Morgantown. HealthNet plans to expand the program to other bases soon.
