Three people were transported to the hospital after an accident in the 6200-block of MacCorkle Avenue SW in Jefferson.  It happened around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.

About 20 power workers helped pull the passengers from the vehicle after the accident.  The crews just happened to be staying at the America's Best Value Inn in St. Albans to help fix phone lines in the area after the big storm.

After they witnessed the accident, the workers pulled people out of the car and immediately started work on the utility pole the car crashed into. Witnesses said the linemen pulled out their own traffic signs to help secure the area.

"They were worried about being electrocuted," said Russell Smith, a motel employee who saw the collision. "But eventually they went ahead and went to the vehicle." Smith added that the linemen fearlessly approached the car at their own risk.

The owner of the Florida-based company, Jett Communications, pulled a young child from the vehicle. He said he just tried to do the right thing and he does not consider himself a hero.

"He just held [the boy] like it was so important," said bystander Carla Harvey, a guest at the motel. "It tears me up."

Harvey said that if her daughter was involved in a similar accident, she would want these linemen to be there to respond quickly.

"The term that came to my mind was they're heroes. I mean actual, real, everyday, working man hero," Harvey said.

The accident remains under investigation.
