More details have been released after the deadly accident in Roane County.

Police tell 13 News,  Tavon Jamal Frisby, 20, and his friend Cameron Marcus Shields, 19, were traveling in the northbound lanes of Interstate 79, by mile marker 31.  

The two were returning to Maryland from a visit to the University of Charleston.

For an unknown reason, Frisby crossed the median of the Interstate, and hit a Volkswagen Jetta head-on in the southbound lanes.

The two occupants of the Jetta were Steven Ranjo, 40, and his father, Leo J. Ranjo, 88,both of Philadelphia.

The father and son were on their way to Cabell Huntington Hospital where Leo's other son  intensive care unit, police said.

There was no word on why the driver of the Nissan crossed the median.


 

UPDATE 

All four lanes of Interstate 79 are now open following the deadly accident.

According to state police, the accident that killed four people on Interstate 79 involved four men; two were from Maryland in one vehicle, and two were from Pennsylvania in the other vehicle.

All four were pronounced dead when rescue crews arrived at the crash near mile marker 31.

Big Otter Volunteer Fire Department and Walton Volunteer Fire Department both responded to the scene.

"This is probably one of the worst accidents our department has had," said Jim Weekley, the Walton fire chief. 

Weekley added that responders needed to perform "extensive extradition."  The medical examiner is conducting toxicology reports on all four victims.

Officers said they are still unsure of what caused the collision.

Roane County 911 dispatchers tell 13 News, two vehicles hit head on in the south-bound lanes of Interstate 79.  

The accident happened near mile marker 31 around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to dispatchers, four people are confirmed dead.  

Emergency crews are still on the scene; we will update this story as more details arise.
